Adding to licensed merchandise

If I owned an embrodery business. Can I embroider something onto a hat that already has a logo on it? Example: A customer wants to purchase a New Era baseball cap that already has a licensed professional sports team logo on it and add an expression/name/location or saying on to it. Would I need any kind of license or permission? This would be for an individual not a company using the sports logo along side its own logo or expression etc.
