Business Name + Domain?
Posted by Anonymous . updated on 2/26/2009
This may seem a bit silly to some, but I am planning to make a business within an existing online MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). It will be a completely non profit business in the sense that it will only operate on game currency. I will hire players in the game to work and pay them with game currency as well. All products sold will be ingame products. The only thing I want that separates it from a virtual business within a game is a website. Tons of people play the game and I want to advertise a bit.. The name of the business is the last name of a well known italian family from the past. After a bit of searching I have seen a couple of real companies with the name. I asked a knowledgeable friend about it and he said as long as my business is non profit and doesn't sell real goods that I wouldn't have any trouble. I don't know whether he is right or not. Does anyone know? (the ingame business doesn't real world item trade, it only deals in game currency and game products)

If you are advertising your "ingame business" in the real world, the business name may very well be a trademark for entertainment related services. If that proves true, the ordinary principals of trademark law would apply.
Regarding using names, that's a bit complicated. You can search the board for "presidents" for a thread on point.
