1. can I add to or expand the claims, how, and is their a time frame this must be completed by

You can add new matter in a separate patent application of the type called "Continuation In Part", CIP for short. The trick is that you must do this when the original patent is ready to be issued AND BEFORE YOU PAY THE ISSUE FEE.
