Congratulations for being an inventor! However to find out if your idea merits patent protection you would need to check the criteria for patentability in your country also do a quick search to see if anything similar exists in your field of invention, these could be blogs, journals or forums where the idea has been discussed as well as prior patent applications or publications.
Mostly companies need to sign a non disclosure agreement with the inventor, however if they are VC's they may not. The company needs to be one of repute in the field of invention. You can check with your lawyer or business advisor for more details.
