Invention idea

I'm not sure if this is the right category I should be asking this question but if it's not please fwd me to the right one. About a year and half ago I went to invent tech they liked my idea and made me sign paper to swear that it was my idea and that they(invent tech) will not steal it. They liked my invention and wanted to work with me. To continue with my project, I needed to give $800 and they have their own lawyers to make sure everything go smooth. Is this legit? I have a great invention but I know I'm not suppose to trust any of those companies out there, I want to have my patent secure and take it to the market, how would I go about it, they told me that I should first discuss it with a lawyer. Please tell me first step to take to go about this. Thank you for your help

I am in Pinellas county, FL about 3 1/2 hours away from you. I have worked with inventors by mail, fax etc in a few instances. You should be ultra concerned to protect your invention, if possible, before doing much disclosing to anyone. There are a lot of crooks out there. In general any Patent Attorney, as well as The American bar Association, and The Federal Trade Commission will always advsie people to be wary fo invention mmarketing companies. The reason is that they arrely ever get any money for their clients.
