Is my idea already patented?

Posted by Anonymous . updated on 2/26/2009
I have an idea I wante patented but I don't really know how to go about checking whether the idea is already patented by someone else.  Can someone offer some suggestions on how to search for existing patents or pending patents to see if my idea is available to be patented?  Thanks.

For an inventor who wants to try his own search, I would recommend
seeking the nearest PTDL (patent and trademark depository library).
Some of them vary in capabilities, but the best ones include facilities
for searching the USPTO database as well as instructions on
how to do a search.  The staff may be helpful too.  They won't
tell you where to search but they will explain what it takes to figure it out
yourself.

You can find the details including a listing of PTDLs in your state
on the USPTO web page.  http://www.uspto.gov/go/ptdl.

Searching is an art that the professionals do better than novices and
there are more places to search than just patents.

And, don't forget that any prior publication describing your invention can be "prior art" -- not just other patents.  Don't limit your search to patents only.

Regards.
