licencing and beyond with no capitol?

I have an idea that modifies an existing product. Not only would it create a new product line for companies currently selling the unmodified versions, but it would also create a new use for users of another totally unrelated product, giving it a new life, so to speak.
From my research, I have found that there are no patent opportunities. Also it appears that every company selling the current product are "subsidiaries of a parent company.(at least as far as home use)
So the question is; How do I make any money off something like this, with no money to start with?
