Patent for Interface Widget, Design or Utility?
Posted by Anonymous . updated on 9/16/2009
What is the best way to patent a unique/innovative interface widget? Is it a utility or a design pattern? How can you protect it from competitors copying it?
An interface widget would be Tabs, or the To Field in the Compose Email in Outlook, or the Ribbon in Office 10.

Hi there,
At times it would be best to go in for both kinds of protection utility and design since you wish to protect both inventive features of your invention.
For the novel, non obvious and Utilitarian part of your invention you may choose a utility patent and to protect the design innovation of your idea you can go in for a design patent
