Patent Protection?
Posted by Anonymous . updated on 2/26/2009
I am an engineering student and was wondering how best to protect the intellectual property rights I have with regard to reports, designs/drawings and calculations? Is the only way to accomplish this through patenting? Can I copyright any of it? Thanks!

Reports/drawings - Protected by copyright on creation. The copyright initially belongs to the author, however, you may have granted some of your rights to the university on enrollment. Patents do not apply
Designs - Drawings/CAD would be copyright. Design itself could be protected by a design patent. A utility patent would apply if the design was novel and not obvious. Again, you may have already transferred some/all rights to the university
Written calculations - Possibly copyright, but is this an original work or have 100 other students created it as well?
Computerized calculations - Code is subject to copyright. Programs can be patented, but novelty would be doubtful if your program is a solution to an assignment
Ok, so why are you looking into this?
