How many different kinds of patents? Which one I should file first?

There are various types of patent applications that you can file depending upon the invention type and its progress. Typically, one can file a provisional or a non-provisional patent application, depending upon the stage at which the invention is. If you come up with an idea and are still working on its details, you may want to file a provisional application. In case your invention is complete, you can file a non-provisional application. A provisional application acts like a place holder for you and you will have to convert it into a non-provisional application within 1 year of its filing date.
