Potential licensee and expenses

After navigating and having contacted someone at a potential licensee and they request an in-person interview/presentation/demo - who typically pays the travel expenses?
Usually a small, medium, or large company could easily afford to shell out a couple $grand, but in the case of a small inventor already low on resources is travel+hotel reasonable to ask for?

That's going to depend on how hot your idea is. Generally speaking, you aren't going to have any luck with that approach; most improvement-type inventions are only worth a few thousand dollars to the licensee/assignee. However, if you've come up with the next Hotmail (the basic concept for web-based email, which was absolutely radical at the time), you may have a better chance.
