Provisional Patent Extension

Provisional Patent Extension - I filed for a provisional in October 2008 and need to convert it to a non-provisional utility patent... however, I am not completely done with the design and need an extension. I've seen extension forms online with USPTO fees for small entity for up to $1175 for several more months... but I'm not sure if this is for provisional extension or something else. Is there a provisional extension form I can use and what are the lengths/terms for the extension?

Hi there,
Additional info: In order to receive an extension of time you must file a "petition for an extension of time" under 37 CFR 1.136 along with your response and pay the appropriate fee for a 3 month extension of time. The current fees are available at http://www.uspto.gov under "How to pay fees".

Hi there,
I’m afraid there is no extension available for a provisional patent application. It is imperative that you file the utility patent within 12 months from the date of provisional patent application, or risk abandoning your patent. For example, if the date was 1st Oct 2008 you must convert it on or before 1st Oct 2009.
However, once you convert the provisional patent into a utility application, you may choose extensions if need be.
So basically extensions are available only for utility applications.
