I have a real estate idea, for lack of a better term. It is nothing more than a concept for a new type of living environment. Is there a way to protect my idea before I seek out ways to make my dream a reality?

Impossible to say without more detail. What I can say for certain is that you should not post any of those details here in a public forum. To paraphrase the cop shows "anything you say here can and will be used against your patent in a court of law."
Contact a patent attorney privately. Many do not charge for an initial consultation and those who do usually charge a nominal fee.
