Well, one of the steps you can take is to sign an NDA with a company.
If they are a Venture Capital in your industry and you are looking for a tie-up with them, then perhaps you can take a look at this link: http://www.patentexpress.com/patent-monetization-video/why-venture-capitalists-do-not--sign-ndas-non-disclosure-agreement_56_6.html

No one can steal your invention, if you have a patent issued for it. So get yourself a patent, and you could license it out to this larger company or sell it to them. You first need the rights to your invention. If you have an issue whether your invention deserves a patent, firstly do a prior art search, see here: http://www.patentexpress.com/patents/prior_art_search_price.aspx

Don't submit any invention to anybody without first consulting a patent lawyer.

A non-disclosure agreement documents your submission of the invention and also contractually binds the other company to maintain your trade secrets. This is sometimes done pending a decision whether to patent if you're seeking assistance from a larger company to secure IP rights. You may want to obtain an initial opinion regarding patent potential prior to submission. An IP (Intellectual Property) attorney can help you with these issues.
