who really owns my invention?

I'am a independ contractor. I was hired by a company to install and set up some new equipment. That turned out lacking in its process. So I was asked to help upgrade the equipment so it would preform better, I did ( about 3 years ) some where along the way I started to think of a completly different type of unit to do the process. I told the owner of the company that I had the Ideal ( about 2 years ago ) he liked the ideal but did not have any time for it. so I went ahead with my ideal and I think it is ready to Patent. I told the owner that I was going to start a patent. Now he wants my ideal and claims the company owns it because ( I never would have begun work on it if I had not been exposed to it through his company in the frist place. ) It is all common knowlge, and over the counter parts, except some home made parts I made.
