What is a Patent Cooperation Treaty? Video Transcript

The PCT is the Patent Cooperation Treaty. It is signed by more than 130 countries and it governs the harmonization of patent laws and it enables people to preserve their rights to file in any foreign country. The reason you want to preserve rights is because it is so expensive to file in every member country. This helps you to wait to file until you determine if your invention is really valuable or not. If it is really valuable, you might want to file in more than one country. If not, you may choose to just protect it in the home country if you are any one of those member countries. The PCT is the treaty that was part of the World Intellectual Property Organization and it is recognized by most developing and developed countries in the world.
