How do you write an abstract for a patent? Video Transcript

In this section, we are going to talk about the abstract and write your abstract. The abstract makes the cover page of an issued patent or a published application. It is often the first thing that people read. However, technically, it is not part of your disclosure. It is important to make sure when you write the abstract that you do not include things in the abstract that are different than your claims, particularly your independent claims. You do not want to have additional words in your abstracts that can be read in as limitations by an unassuming juror or someone that might be evaluating your patent application. The abstract is short. It is like the summary; it is only a 150 words. So, usually it is the independent claim 1, rewritten in English form by taking the semicolons out and separating them into sentences, making sure that you are not introducing too many new words, if any at all, and making sure that that abstract is at most 150 words.
