What is the field of technology section of a patent application? Video Transcript
In this section, we are going to identify the field of your technology. The field of your technology is a statement that usually starts off a patent application. It defines a general class that your invention starts in and the general area where your invention starts in. It could be similar to what you just did before when you identified the class of your invention, but it is a more general term – is your invention related to communication, is it related to enterprise software? So, that is the first thing you have to identify. The second portion of identifying the field of your technology is a more specific statement about a narrow area in that general broad area that distinctly identifies what is the general area that encompasses your invention. Often, it is similar to your title. You can think of this field of technology as a combination of your class of your invention that you did before and the title. But you do not have to use those exacts same words. The class is a bit too broad because it is either one of those four choices. Here you could make it even narrower like the field of communication or the field of nanotechnology, the field of toys or games of chance, whatever it is. And the specific statement which is similar often to your title, but a brief statement of what particularly in one sentence does your invention seek to solve and what does it actually do. Often, that is a mirror of the title but it can be written out so that you can perhaps think about exactly how your invention is going to end up working. This statement is going to be auto-generated either generated by Patent Express right at the beginning of you patent application to give a reader or patent examiner or potential licensee a general sense of where your invention falls.
