Can you write to the United States Patent Office? Video Transcript

Can you write to the USPTO after your application has been filed to ask them about status and have any questions answered? The answer to that is yes, you can. If you have an attorney, you generally probably should work through your attorney. The USPTO will want to talk through your attorney because you have hired them to represent you and best protect your interests. Usually that attorney is going to be knowledgeable about your invention, plus he is going to be a member of the US Patent Bar, so he will understand all the intricacies that go about in securing your rights. But if you do not have an attorney and you are doing things on your own, absolutely the US Patent and Trademark Office is very helpful to inventors and will answer your questions and talk to you and tell you about the status and sometimes discuss the options you have to get things through the Patent Office after you get an office action as well. So a good website to see is the www.uspto.gov and when you get an office action on your case, usually it lists the examiner that is in charge of your case and their phone number and sometimes even the email and their supervisor's number, so you can contact them and get your questions answered regarding your case.
